Pens & Ink I use, plus a Turkey

Someone asked “what am I using to draw the birds?’   Well, so far it’s mostly been the sepia calligraphy ink from Winsor & Newton and two fountain pens on watercolor paper.

The one on the right (with the cork) has a nib that splits three ways which makes it easy to get thicker lines.  The lower pen has a nib that splits into two with a finder point for thinner lines. Both seem to hold about the same amount of ink surprisingly.

One of my problems has been making sure I don’t load up too much ink because it will tend to release more than I want on the first touch back to the page.  This is annoying if you run out of ink mid-stroke on a thin line, then reload, you come back and it will drop more ink than you expect.

I drew a Turkey because we see them around the neighborhood. I think I might have overdone it on the size of the feet but maybe not. (their run is freaky!)

Thanks, Jen K. for the suggestion to do a background wash this time, I like how it warms things up and has varying darkness.  I think doing this actually made me go with a much thicker line this time which turned out looking pretty cool.

After adding the color, I think it pops!
